The desires of Scotland and certain parts of Spain, Italy and Belgium to go their own way have one thing in common – money, say Deutsche Bank economists. In a special report on separatist movements, Deutsche says the absence of similar movements in France and Germany can also be traced to financial considerations.

The first chart below shows the difference between rich and poor parts of countries once you exclude outliers such as London, Paris or Brussels.
