“Si amb nosaltres”, foreign-born Catalans for independence

Catalan MonitorNews Roundup

A new association of Catalans who support full independence has been presented. What’s the difference with other already existing groups? It is made up of people who were born in foreign countries, but who have chosen Catalonia as their country of residence. According to their manifesto:

“The Association “Sí, amb nosaltres” is a non-profit, non-partisan association created by members of the Catalan community, originating from diverse parts of the world, who wish to actively participate in the construction of a new Catalonia. […] We, our families and our Catalan neighbours have witnessed the progressive destruction of the welfare state, the lowering of incomes and the increasing difficulties faced by many accessing adequate food, health and education. We believe this due, among other causes, to the centralist economic policies of the Spanish government, which do not favour Catalonia.”

The Catalan daily Vilaweb was at Si amb nosaltres’ presentation to report on its members’ speeches:

Vilaweb | Ana Surra: “There are 1.2 million of us and we also want the right to decide”
“We want to be an active part of this community that has welcomed us. We also want the right to decide. There are 1.2 million of us [out of a population of 7.5 million]. We are important, and our area of influence—our friends and acquaintances and family members—is an important area of influence. This is one of the most important issues facing our country.

“I plan to vote Yes-Yes, but other people in our group are for just a single Yes, and still others favor a No vote. The important thing is that the people are allowed to vote. This is our own future. We are convinced. Yes, with us too. [Sí, amb nosaltres]. Long live Catalonia.”
