The Franco era torturer Antonio González Pachecho, better known as ‘Billy the boy’, participated in a celebration run by the Spanish Police which was held at a police station in Madrid this past Thursday. According to Eldiario.es, González Pacheco was invited ‘like any other retired policeman’.
Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande Marlaska explained that he has asked the director general of the Spanish Police, Francisco Pardo, for an investigation into this occurence. Earlier, the Spanish government spokesman Isabel Celaá had discounted the issue at a press conference, saying of Pacheco “he is a free citizen who can participate in events wherever he is invited to do”.
Celaá was unable to clarify when the medals awarded to Pacheco for police merit, for which he receives a special pension, will be removed [a process which is ongoing]. She said she is unaware of the stage at which the process is currently, and that “probably next week” she could offer more information.
Later, in the afternoon, in a further turn of events, Spanish police opened a disciplinary case against the head of the Caudillo Lineal police station, José Manuel Mariscal de Ghante, for having invited the torturer.
