In spite of the calls from the unionist side not to politicize the events of commemoration of “17-A” (August 17th, 2017, the date of the Barcelona terror attacks), today Spanish nationalism, on several occasions, interrupted and disrupted the outpourings of solidarity and mourning of Barcelonians. Some of the most significant occurrences of these disappointing interventions are assembled here.

1. The Spanish nationalist groups called upon to attend the event in Plaça de Catalunya applauded the Spanish king and screamed ‘Felipe, Felipe!’, drowning out any of the words being said to honour the memory of the victims.

2. Gemma Nierga, the emcee for the event, was interrupted many times, by people yelling she ought to be speaking in Spanish.

3. A large banner protesting the presence of King Felipe VI which was hung from a building in Plaça de Catalunya also aroused indignation from the unionist camp. The police officers in front of the building in question were shouted at by unionists yelling at them to “pull down the banner”.

4. There were several incidents where unionists blocked the movements of Catalan police officers and vans.

5. Several individuals attempted to impede the progress of people carrying anti-military banners in Canaletes, as well.

6. Someone lay out a collection of Spanish flags to spell “SOS” on the ground:

7. Several people were aggressive with members of the Catalan media, calling them “manipulators”.

8. Several individuals marched down to the Joan Miró mural, chanting “Spain! Spain!”, carrying Spanish flags.

9. Further interruptions and yelling about Catalonia and the pro-independence movement continued during speeches honouring the victims of the terror attack.

10. Next to the Joan Miró mural, a woman yells at another and tells her to “look at what your identity card says, ‘SPAIN!’”. Near them, a man plays John Lennon’s “Imagine” on a guitar.
