Three men detained for accompanying Puigdemont are released

The National Police released three detainees charged this evening for having accompanied Carles Puigdemont on his trip between Finland and Belgium. The detainees were two off-duty Catalan Police officers and the historian Josep Lluís Alay, who have since departed the police station of La Verneda. All three were detained during the day today [March 28th] accused of a suspected crime of “concealment”. According to police sources, the three men are waiting for the National Court to call them to appear in court.

Police sources have indicated that, in the case of the two police officers, after giving statements and going through standard procedure, they were released at 9:25 p.m. Alay, detained at 7:20 p.m. by agents of the General Information Office in the Illa Diagonal car park, was released shortly after 10:00 p.m. According to his lawyer, Jaume Alonso Cuevillas, the historian has refused to make a statement, since the issues with which he is acussed are not criminal, and he was therefore released immediately.

The National Police arrested Xavier Goicoechea Fernández and Carlos de Pedro López at the noon, both of whom were traveling Sunday with Puigdemont in the van towards Brussels when they were intercepted in Germany. Also in the vehicle, was Josep Lluís Alay and businessman Josep Maria Matamala, who has not been detained. At this time, the National Court is still administering various proceedings to do with this case.
