The rector of the University of Glasgow, Aamer Anwar, announced that he would personally take charge of the defense of Clara Ponsatí. In Scotland, the rectors are not the top leaders of the universities, as in the Catalan Countries, but the presidents of the university’s cloister [Ed: representing students to the senior management, and acting as the statutory chair of the Court, the governing body of the University].

Anwar said that he had decided to do so, on the premise that Ponsatí would not have a fair trial in Spain and because there is no guarantee that they would respect her human rights. VilaWeb has obtained confirmation from sources close to the Catalan government that Anwar will indeed be defending Ponsatí.

Aamer Anwar is a Scottish lawyer of Pakistani origin. He is known for his leftist positions and for being a great fighter for human rights around the world. In 2017 he was named ‘lawyer of the year’ in Scotland.
