Supreme Court judge Pablo Llarena, has decided to send Jordi Turull, Josep Rull, Carme Forcadell, Raül Romeva and Dolors Bassa to prison. With this decision, there are now nine pro-independence leaders who have been jailed, after the same decision was taken months ago with regards to Jordi Cuixart, Jordi Sànchez, Joaquim Forn and Oriol Junqueras. This morning it was made known that Marta Rovira decided to take the path of exile.

Llarena’s decision wasn’t certain, but it was very likely. Both the prosecutor’s office and their lawyers Vox had called for five rulings of prison without bail for the defendants. In the morning it was announced that all of them would be prosecuted for the crime of rebellion – along with eight more – and in the reading of the statement during which this was announced, a warning that they might be “tempted to flee” was mooted. Finally the statement said that the investigation showed they have all “systematically” undermined judicial decisions in recent years.

During the reading of the statement, Llarena justified his decision by stating there is a serious risk of escape from the five politicians and also of criminal reiteration. According to the judge, the resignation of Bassa and Forcadell from their seats as deputies in parliament does not exempt them from continuing to collaborate outside of parliament to achieve the independence of Catalonia. Llarena also argued that the limitation of their political rights as parliamentarians was justified, especially in the case of Turull as a candidate for investiture, and responds to the judicial need to preserve other rights, bearing in mind ‘the serious crimes that they are charged with’.

Romeva, Turull and Rull will be admitted into the prison of Estremera, where they spent a month between November 2th and December 4th 2017. Bassa and Forcadell were transferred to the women’s prison of Alcalá Meco, where Bassa was there during the same period and Forcadell on the night of November 11th.

The five prisoners left a last message before entering the prison.
