The Catalan Ombudsman has issued a public statement regarding the recent ruling by the Spanish Constitutional Tribunal, which it has also submitted to the European Court of Human Rights. It considers the ruling which requires Carles Puigdemont’s investiture to be pre-approved by judicial ruling to be in violation of his rights as an elected deputy, and the rights of the citizens of Catalonia to political participation by active suffrage.

He states their detention is “a classic case of arbitrary political detention”.
