It has emerged that the tenant at the apartment in Balsareny, where a fire was allegedly caused by the malicious burning of a Spanish flag, is a far-right radical, who spent the afternoon prior to the fire ringing the doorbell of the local Mayor’s house, harassing them and burning Catalan flags.
According to La Nació Digital, the events took place on Saturday at 5pm, when Jordi Cervantes, the owner of the flat where the Spanish flag was burned, with a dozen other men, were identified in front of the house of the Mayor of Balsareny, Isidre Viu.
The mayor explained that the individuals repeatedly rang his doorbell, and subsequently burned a Catalan flag in front of his gate. One version of the story which circulated around town was that the burning of the Spanish flag was instigated by Cervantes and his group, in order to bring the independence movement of the town into disrepute – this was also reported in La Nació Digital.
Jordi Cervantes complained on October 9th that a man from Balsareny had been aggressive to his 9-year-old son for ripping down pro-independence propaganda posters. However, the defendant stated that when he later re-hung the posters that the child had ripped off, he was himself harassed by the boy, with “serious insults and nasty wording” who subsequently damaged the door of his home.

Furthermore, an elderly group of walkers from the Excursionist Center of Vilafranca del Penedès, whom, last Wednesday, November 22nd reported being harassed by a pro-unionist while taking a photograph at the top of the Collbaix with a Catalan Flag, identified this same Jordi Cervantes as the person of the insulting them at the top of the mountain.
The Spanish President, Mariano Rajoy, called the family of the radical in question, and spoke with his wife, offering emotional support, after the “attempted Spanish flag burning” at their house.
