The Committee for the Defense of the Republic called for a manifestation in Plaça de Cuba, this Sunday, to reject the aggression suffered by a resident of Mataró yesterday, just after the pro-union march. Meanwhile, the Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalan Police) are looking for the perpetrators of the attack, said to be a group of around 15 people who had been part of the march.

The events to be condemned in this next demonstration took place yesterday at 6.30pm in Fray Luis de Leon street, when a group of fifteen of those who had taken part in the march in favor of the unity of Spain attacked and punched a 30 year old man. The young man had to be treated at the Hospital in Mataró for the various injuries he suffered.

According to several witnesses, there were two people most involved in beating the man, who was accompanied by his partner, at the time. The aggressors, however, had the support of about 15 others. The group, according to certain witnesses, were demanding the couple shout ‘Viva España’, and, when they did not do so, they were attacked. The attackers fled afterwards in the direction of Pla d’en Boet.

The Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalan Police) pointed out that the attackers were part of the demonstration, but clarified that the events took place after the march had finished. The aggression, in any case, occurred very close to where the march had passed, having gone through Sant Benet street, which joins Fray Luis in the direction of the Town Hall. This Sunday morning, the Catalan Police continued to collect testimonies from neighbors, some of whom have contributed videos to help identify the attackers. At the moment, there have not yet been any arrests.
